Window trim test

Today Janis & I finally had the time to sit down and talk about how we wanted to do our window/door trim in the living room, dining room and entry areas. Janis has long loved a butterflies and so we decided this would be the theme of these areas. The trim will resemble the heart trim on the exterior of the house with a layered panel (of butterflies instead of hearts) in the center.

We started with a sketch as always. We determined the butterfly antenna and tail would have to be removed due to the scale of the butterlies.

We would use our MultiCam CNC router to create the panels. I created the router program and then set the fancy computerized machine into motion.

The test panel looked pretty good. We looked it over carefully and decided to make a couple of minor tweaks to make it better. The butterflies will be enlarged just a tad to help them route better. I'll also adjust the spacing just a little as well. As a point of reference this panel is 8" wide as it will be between and around the big round windows.

Tomorrow the routing of the permanent panels wll begin. I can hardly wait to start putting all the pieces together soon.

Just under the wire

Just before Christmas we determined that we didn't need to ready the upstairs in the new house for guests. We instead managed to squeeze everyone into the old house one last time. The result is we shut the construction down over the holidays and simply relaxed and enjoyed oursleves. After Christmas we worked on the tree staircase as a priority.

But I was determined to finish the preliminary carpentry work in Phoebe's playroom before the New Year was upon us. Today I could put off the task no longer if I were to meet my self-imposed dealine. It took me all day but I managed to achieve the task.

The day's job was to install the panelling in the shelf area. Phoebe loves to create elaborate dioramas that take a 'long, long time'. With all the work she puts into them they are best displayed for a long while. Hence the need for some serious, adjustable shelving. There is almost fourteen feet of shelving and it stretches up to the ceiling. The adjustable brackets will be installed after the painting is done.

The room is now ready for the last of the painting. Flooring will be the next project and then final trim to finish off the job.

Now I'm ready to ring in the New Year.

Ready for trim

The last few days have been spent cleaning the dust off the drywall in preparation for the paint that will start next week. There has been lots of sweeping, tidying and rearranging. Tools and supplies no longer needed have been removed from the house. This morning I did the living room, one of the first areas that will recieve it's trim.

Because of the unique designs and ideas pretty much everything will have to be custom made. It should come together pretty quickly as many of the pieces are already in production.

It is going to be fun to put it all togeher!
