Like riding a bike

It has been nine years since I laid the tile in my studio and only a couple of times previous to that but today I started the tile work in the house. We had considered hiring professionals for the task, but because we wanted things somewhat fancy it pays me well to do it myself. We also get exactly what we want. We hunted down the tile saw stashed out in the shop along with some tile laying tools and set to work.

Janis' office was the first room to get the treatment. A built in desk will wrap around three of the walls so the pattern was kept to a minimum and only in the center of the room. We opted for nine small diamonds in a contrasting darker brown. Simple but elegant.

I left the finicky edges for tomorrow as it is much easier to do it in two stages.

The first day (four hours) of tiling went smoothly. It all came back to me in a hurry just like riding a bike.

Shining crown

Today Brent and Jesse Boughen installed the crown molding in the hallway. It was installed a little difffenrent from the norm. We used an angle backer to both hold the molding in place and to also support the Heico LED lignt modules at a perfect angle to throw light across the curved ceiling.

The crown molding now runs the entire length of the hallway.

The next step is to thread the wires through all of the modules and fire up the LED's at last. I can hardly wait!

Getting fancy

The Boughen boys are working hard each day to add the fnishing details to our dream house. Today they began work on the crown molding though the long center hallway. Because of the curved ceiling and the addition of indirect LED lightng along the entire length of the molding a few extra steps are required. Before the crown molding can be installed we had to first install a 3" x 1.25" board. This will space the crown molding off the wall and in the process make room for the lighting modules. An angled backer board behind the crown will provide a secure mounting point for the LED lights.

Tomorrow, the crown molding will be installed making it time at last for the LED's
