The finished staircase is plenty strong and did not need a structural brace on the backside. But guests will approach the staircase from this side and so we decided to add a smaller hydraulic cylinder under the overhang for two reasons. Firstly, it looks very cool and adds interest. Secondly, it will gently direct guests away from cutting under the stairway and the possibility of bumping their noggin as they do.
