Sometimes things that appear relatively simple are actually quite complex. The current job falls into that category. I’ve been working on the first of two gantry tops for the better part of two days. The welded assembly is comprised of more than thirty pieces. It measures about five feet tall and will bolt to a much larger assembly to hold up the submarine which will follow. The curved pieces are hand formed to ensure a perfect fit before I tacked them in place, laid down the long welds and then used a powered sanding disc to grind them smooth. The second piece will hopefully go much faster because I’ve pre-cut many of the pieces as I did the first one. I’ve also made all of the mistakes and figured out the best way to accomplish the task.
