The making of a steel tree

On the garden door to the Under Hill suite we have begun building a dimensional tree of welded steel. The process is simple, albeit time consuming. A 1/4 inch pencil rod is bent to shape and then welded into place The welding bead is purposely made to be a little uneven, the roughness making for a better bark look. Rod after rod, bead after bead of weld is carefully laid down. The roots intertwine and lock some real river stones in place at the bottom. Slowly we are working out way around and up the tree. The effort is considerable but the result is a beautiful tree made of steel. One more delightful detail among countless others on this project. Stay tuned for progress…
