For almost a decade I made my living primarily as a historical muralist. I got to travel the countryside painting huge historical murals. I had done a number of murals in one of the most famous mural towns, Chemainus B.C. Canada and these murals afforded me the opportunity to travel elsewhere to do the same. We criss-crossed Canada and the United States many times painting more than 110 murals so far. I still enjoy painting the occasional mural these days although not nearly as many in the late 80’s and early 90’s.
I have my favorite murals of course, with one of the top murals being this one I painted on my studio and home in Chemainus. I have always loved trains and on this mural I got to pick the subject. I chose the logging train that used to run in the hills surrounding the town. The old relic sits parked in a local museum now. Before painting it I got to climb up into the cab and imagine how it would be to run this noisy steaming beast. I took plenty of pictures and notes before painting it on the wall of our house. The mural is twenty years old now and still looking good, having been seen and enjoyed by millions of people through those years.
