After a long, long day of sculpting I am happy to say one gas pump is now done and ready for paint. There is certainly a lot more surface area on one of these things than meets the eye at first glance. I had fun with all the details, going back to my drawings and reference pictures occasionally to make sure the details were correct.
I purposely left some rough spots and sculpted in some dings and dents to make these pumps look used and well worn. There’s even a ‘sheet metal’ patch screwed onto the lower corner on the back side to ‘cover the hole where someone bumped into the pump’. As we paint we will age them further and in this way tell our story. They must fit into the landscape seamlessly and look like they have been there for years serving our fictitious community. I know countless pictures will be taken as people pose beside them with pone hand on the gas hose handle in the coming years.
