Our Sign Magic Workshops aren’t for the faint of heart. The extensive preparations are begun months in advance. As the weekend of the workshop approaches the excitement builds. But while we make last minute preparations our guests are traveling from near and far, also getting their heads ready for some intense learning.
The first folks started arriving on Thursday afternoon. We were ready and I was out front of the shop, resting quietly, like the calm before the storm. I just knew it would quickly change. Each group we host is different and they shape the experience they will receive. This group came to learn. They each arrived in turn, and by supper time the small talk had turned more serious, about signs they saw, the materials and methods we used - mostly strange to them.
After supper we returned to the shop and it was time to get to business - even though the workshop didn’t officially kick off until the next morning. Everyone stayed past 11:00 pm even though most had spent the day on the road and were tired. The next morning a few were waiting when I unlocked the shop door at eight.
The next three days were full of inspiration, learning and hands-on practice. This group showed their passion for the craft, quick to soak in what I shared, eager to try it for themselves. The panels they painted, and sculpted were imaginative. We talked, laughed, shared meals together and worked long, long hours through the weekend. It was another great workshop! As always I was learning as much as I taught...
Today the shop is quiet, there’s things to clean up and organize in preparation for production that will start once more. But for today I think I’ll sit and gather my thoughts, slow down a little before carrying on once more. Thanks to my family for working so hard, often behind the scenes to make it possible. Thanks to to those who traveled so far to attend and for all you contributed to make it so special.
