Last night, instead of sleeping I was thinking about the hotrod. It is my intention to add lots of somewhat frivolous, but absolutely necessary detail to the car, both inside and out. As is our custom, every piece needs to tell a story and serve a ‘vital purpose’. As I was thinking about needed details I realized I hadn’t made provision for a cupholder. I needed one of those for sure as I am known to enjoy the occasional Coca Cola. And as I thought about this useful accessory it of course began to become something much grander than what you might find in a modern automobile. The Overland is a Victorian era vehicle after all and will be in the style of the Steampunk I enjoy. One question led to another as I thought… What if this marvellous cupholder could keep the drink hot or cold? What might it look like with period correct controls and gauges? It will be mounted to the seat riser, between the driver and passenger. It will be made of various bits and pieces I can source in the scrap bin of the shop or fashion on my own in a hurry. And of course the cup holder will sport the same fabulous rust patina of the rest of the speedster automobile. A quick sketch refined my ideas to a reasonable degree. No doubt the cupholder will further evolve as I start to build. Stay tuned…
