I love historical structures. On the way north through the Fraser Canyon you can get a brief glimpse of the old Alexandra bridge from the ‘new’ bridge that was built in the 1960’s. The Alexandra bridge is a single lane suspension bridge, long unused. I was last on it about five years ago and was determined to take the time for the ten minute hike to view it again. Once down to the bridge I decided to take a few more minutes to climb down the rocks to get a good picture. It is a gorgeous bridge that was constructed in 1926 on the piers of the first cable bridge that had been built there in 1863. The bridge was last used by vehicles in 1964. This afternoon I talked with my dad who told me he had been over the bridge many times back when it was in regular use. He also told me about the wooden plank ‘cordoroy’ roads that were suspended off the side of the nearby cliffs. He and his family had travelled this road for the first time when they moved to BC from Saskatchewan. He remembered how frightened his mother had been on the journey. Things have changed a lot from the good old days.
