Cut, weld, grind, repeat

It’s a holiday weekend in British Columbia which means I have three whole days of shop time to work on the hotrod. I picked up a new (to me) rear end last week. It is 3” narrower than the previous one plus it has disc brakes. Installing it will require quite a number of changes to the frame but most of them were needed in any case as the old setup wasn’t lined up very well. All the modifications meant I had to pull the body off the car one more time which made things a whole lot easier to access. Since I am lowering the car significantly I first needed to replace the center cross member and fabricate a new transmission mount to give me proper clearance underneath. Then I removed the old rear end, cut out the rear frame crossmember and fabricated a new one with an arch to clear the rear differential. By the end of the day I had all of that work finished and the new rear end positioned under the car. I sat and stared at the new assembly long enough to figure out what the new brackets will look like. I have some shiny, new airbags in transit for the rear suspension which will provide a nice clean installation. They should eliminate the squeaking from the old binding springs that were on the car previously and the new brackets will align the four bar suspension components perfectly. Tomorrow I’ll be at it again, having fun!
