As I looked up at the utterly amazing ‘floating rocks’ in Pandora today I could hear my building construction teacher tell me that it would have been so much easier and cheaper to build them on the ground. We butted heads regularly as I designed ‘impractical’ ideas for my school projects. I would always explain that I was building for effect - not efficiency. The floating rocks which are the size of a good sized house, are nothing short of a major feat of engineering. Years ago I watched them construct these features and saw the massive foundations, huge curved beams and everything else that safely holds these things up. I know the rocks are not real and are in fact hollow shells…. but all that only makes this land so much more amazing to see for I know what it takes to build this kind of feature. We do the same in our shop daily, albeit on a much smaller and less complex scale. Hat’s off to the Disney Imagineers!
