We’ve poured many hundreds of cubic yards of concrete through the years. Today’s pour was most likely one of the easiest we’ve ever done. It was a simple matter of backing the concrete truck up to the drum base and chuting three and a half cubic yards of concrete into the bottom section. It didn’t need to be pretty. We troweled it smooth enough to not trip someone who walked there during installation of the drum. That’s all that was required for it will be buried under eighteen inches of gravel when we are finished. The concrete will act as twelve thousand pounds of ballast weight and an above ground footer for the drum to help prevent it from blowing away or sinking into the tundra. With the concrete in place it was time to head back into the shop to continue work of skinning the giant drum.
