It is a tradition in some cultures to prepare for the New Year by purchasing a bunch of new stuff. New clothes and a fresh haircut are a must I hear. While I need a haircut, I have plenty of nice (enough) clothes. That tradition did seem like the perfect excuse to build myself a new workbench just in time for 2022. We have a whole lot of fabricating to start in the New Year so a custom (for me) work station seemed to be a great idea. I thought about all the things I would like changed on our old fabrication table which still has many years of life yet and will still be used in the shop. This one is a little taller so I don’t have to bend over when I work. It is narrower so I can easily reach all sides of my projects. The vise will be mounted below the top work surface so it is at hand but not in the way. On the other end, just below the work surface I’ll mount my very favouritest anvil. I figure if it is handy I’ll use it even more than I do already (which is much more than Peter and Matt believe to be true). All of our clamps are now hung on both sides of the I-beam which supports the 5/8” thick steel top of the table. I still have to rig some electrical plugs on each side so I’m not always looking for those pesky extension cords. And a few more accessories like sanding and cutting disk holders are yet to be added. Those who look closely at the photo will notice one castor wheel is still missing. It will arrive on Monday. This new workbench will be a great way to start the New Year. Happy New Year all!
