Although I don’t drink alcohol I absolutely love to design and create pub signs and interiors. Few projects offer an opportunity to be more creative. Almost ten years ago we got the chance to work with the delightful owners of the Fox and Hounds Pub in Aldergrove as they renovated the well known pub. While they had a definite vision in mind for the pub they allowed us a lot of freedom in the design and execution of the decor. We suggested they use fanciful dimensional signs to tell the ‘true’ story of the pub. We had a whole lot of fun creating the legend of the pub in real life. The backstory is definitely entertaining. It all revolves around Britain of course as this is a British pub. In 1593 the British discovered the Galapagos Islands. The islands are famous for the tortoises that live there. Hence the ‘Laughing Tortoise Beer’ and the date ‘1593’. The byline ‘Drink it slow!’ was a last minute afterthought. The Fox and Hounds Pub is chock full of many similar interesting signs and ‘artifacts’. We’ll be featuring a few of our favourites in coming days.
