Concept art

One of my main jobs is to create concept art for prospective projects. I have lots of help, especially from Peter and Becke. On most days I give things a start and when Peter or Becke peek over my shoulder they offer helpful suggestions and an honest critique. They also come up with some fantastic ideas! Often it means scrapping what I’m working on and going with a better solution. Sometimes their comments spark discussion and a brilliant idea emerges from our brainstorming. When a final idea is agreed on, I do up the presentation art for the customer. But even if we dream up a wonderful scheme it does not guarantee it will be built. There are still many hurdles to cross which can literally take years. The clients have to buy in to the plan. Zoning, financing, planning, timing, a change of heart, or a hundred other things can sink our ambitious plans along the way. The reality is that only a very small fraction of our concepts will actually be built. The rest are quietly filed away. You can’t possibly imagine the great ideas that gather dust in our files. Maybe some day…
