What makes a good sign?

As a preface to most of the articles I write for sign publications I start by defining a sign. Most people define a sign as a board or other flat surface with words on it. We describe a sign to be ‘anything that effectively draws attention to a customer’s product service or business.’ It is a broad definition that allows for a lot of creativity. As I came around to our front yard to mow the lawn this afternoon there was a small traffic jam on the road. It is normal to see a car to even two stopped in front but today there were five cars which had parked and others were stopped on the road to let pedestrians cross. I had to chuckle as I witnessed groups of people on the sidewalk, waiting for their turn to pose in front of the Hazelnut Inn for their selfie. While the people were waiting for a picture they were googling the name of the Inn and also Imagination Corporation to see what it was all about. We purposely designed every element of the inn with this intent in mind. Our ‘signs’ were clearly working as intended.
