INSTANT BARNACLES

back of sign detail

Today I managed to sneak a little more time away from my design desk to work on the submarine sign. I carved a paint stir stick to form the perfect tool to quickly form barnacles with the sculpting epoxy. I also sculpted two starfish to add to the sign frame as well.  It didn’t take long to add a bunch of detail to the project.

Tomorrow I’ll finish carving the heavier textures into the piece before the thick, creamy primer starts being layered on, adding more subtle textures and surface detail where necessary.  Then the real fun starts as the metallic base coats and then layers of subtle color will be painstakingly applied making the aged sign look like its been hanging around the salt water for a long, long time.

It should be a real head turner when the project is done!  I haven’t had so much fun in the shop for a long time!
