I consider myself a sign person but my definition of a sign is definitely a little different than most. I define a sign as anything that draws attention to a customer’s business, product or service. This can include sculpture, landscaping, buildings, interiors or anything else I can think of. In this day and age off computer generated sameness our work is far different than what most sign shops create.
Our work is almost always dimensional. No flat boards with letters stuck on them here. We use a wide variety of materials and construction methods, depending on the project. It’s all about what will work best for the project at hand.
One of my favorite friends was the sign pictured above. It was for a local gravel pit. The owner simply said “make me a landmark and make it memorable.” When I showed him the concept he laughed out loud and said GO! The sign is all welded steel and made from recycled scraps from local steel fabricators. After we installed it my client put a small advertisement in the local paper announcing a contest to name his new sign. The prize was a load of dirt or gravel. Amazingly he received more than 400 entries. The name chosen was ‘Scoops”. Scoops has become a local landmark and somewhat of a celebrity. When there is a local parade He is removed from his base and paraded through town on the back of an antique truck. He has even travelled to neighboring cities and towns in the region and won many ribbons too.
This project proved just how effective this type of sign can be. Thinking up and creating this type of sign is also a LOT of fun! It sure beats actually having to work for a living!
