Often I get a great idea that has no place to go. I make a little sketch or note in one of my handy sketchbooks and file it away for future use. Good ideas don’t go bad but they often languish in my idea bank for a long while.
We were on holidays to Florida a few years ago and we were visiting Disney’s Animal Kingdom when I saw a fossil of dinosaur skull mounted to a wall in one of the exhibits. It hit me that such a fossil would look very cool mounted over a fireplace. It would be a fun way to poke at my great white hunter brother-in-laws. It would have to be massive and very gnarly of course. I filed the idea away in my sketchbook for future use. Each time we work on our new house plans I bring up the wonderful idea, but Janis has yet to warm up to it.
When it came time for the MultiCam office I decided on a Jurassic theme. The owner liked the diea too. While there is no fireplace I dug up the old idea for the mounted fossil. Since the MultiCams are built so heavy and durable I decided it would fit right in.
We finished the sculpting today. In the picture above Kirsten is just finishing putting on the base coat of paint. Since the Triceratops happens to be Phoebe’s favorite dinosaur I’m crafting a second, smaller copy for her birthday. I know she’ll be excited. Maybe Phoebe will be able to convince her grandma that a HUGE spinosaurus, fossilized skull would look fabulous over our fireplace when we build the new house.
