A ‘necessarium’ - was a communal latrine found in mediaeval monasteries in Western Europe. As we work on the many features for the North Star suite at the Hazelnut Inn, we wanted to add some appropriate detailing to the rather mundane bathroom door. We sourced a used wooden door to start. This rather beat up relic was a great foundation. Peter designed and cut a decorative steel plate to mount the antique crystal door knob and brasslatch. Some fancy woodwork underneath took care of the tricky mounting. Since the door was three inches too short he spliced some wood to the bottom and added a fanciful steel kicker plate to each side. While he was doing that work the CNC router was whittling a name plate for the door. Becke will work her painting magic to make this look like an antique brass plaque. She’ll add some paint and patinas to the door while she’s at it. The final result turns an ordinary old door into something memorable - one more small detail in a remarkable room.
