Getting a handle on things

The CNC plasma cutter makes the fitting and fabricating of complex metal shapes a whole lot easier than in years past when things were done by hand. Designing is done on the computer and the CNC plasma cuts accurately using those files. Gone are the days of tedious laying out on each sheet of metal and then hand cutting with a torch before a whole lot of grinding to make things ready to weld. The giant pump handle will be assembled using more than forty pieces of heavy sheet steel. I spent the bulk of my day shaping, fitting and tacking a bunch of pieces together. There is still another five foot section to add onto the end which will happen tomorrow. Once everything is assembled we’ll go back and lay down more than 200 feet of welding bead to make it one permanent assembly.
