This afternoon I finished assembling the Christie’s Decorative Stitching sign. The sign honours another member of the England family, owners of NEB’s Fun World in Oshawa, Ontario. This sign, along with the three others will hang on the front wall of the building facade in the entrance foyer. Tomorrow I’ll finish a little hand sculpting making the sign ready to paint. Matt the master
Hand-sculpting realistic wood grain into our special concrete mix is a delicate art that takes much practice and study. Matt is a true master. The key is to sculpt it in such a way with plenty of deep texture so that it will be easy to paint and glaze as it is finished. Each piece of heavy timber needs to be unique to be believable. The fifty-two-foot wide by thirty-five-foot tall building facade will have scores of timbers, and hundreds of stones, along with thousands of bricks and shingles. Each element is carefully hand-sculpted and then painted to achieve hyper-realism. Stay tuned for much more…
First piece of many finished
My days are always busy and full. Much of my time is spent in the studio, designing new projects, talking to clients and making sure everyone has everything they need to keep productive. I keep an eye on all the various projects in all stages of completion throughout the shop. Sometimes I even get to do actual hands-on work on pieces of projects. Our challenge is to have every project appear as if it came from one mind and hand - even though it takes the effort of many, most often working independently. Our crew does an amazing job, without fail. Six people worked on this little sign, guided only by a simple line drawing. The result is spectacular. Amazingly, this sign is but a very small part of a much larger project which will be awe-inspiring when it is fully assembled on site. Stay tuned…
