It is not often we use the work of other artists in our features. Last year during our Sculpture Magic Workshop my good friend Jim Dawson, from Ohio, sculpted a nice owl totem as his demonstration piece. He decided to leave it with us because it was impractical to take home on the plane. As I fabricated the sloping beam and rock wall armature for the Underhill suite I decided it needed a post feature on the end in the centre of the planter. The landscaping will slope down behind it and then continue in a wrap towards the front. The horizontal beams above the door posts will have owls carved into the ends which reminded me of the owl that Jim had done last year, I dug it out of the planter by the studio and welded it to the post in the planter. We’ll extend the woodgrain down into the soil below. By day’s end tomorrow the armature should be finished on one side which means next week I can begin on the other.
