The flooding in our area is real and very severe without a doubt. Our little community of Yarrow is now under evacuation order. We watch from our front window as the emergency crews gather at the firehall across th street and then head out with evacuation notices for the homes around us. We have yet to receive our notice but we know it is coming. As we wait we are doing what we can to get ready. Our home is one of the highest in Yarrow and so we are not worried about our property but many around us will not be so fortunate. We live in a flood plain, which used to drain into the Sumas River. The Nooksak River which normally flows south into Washington has breached it’s levy which is what is causing the problems. We are fifteen miles distant but the water is filling the prairie and creeping towards us. Thankfully there is good news as well. The roads out of our little town are now open for the first time in a couple of days with a single lane for people leaving. I hear the river has crested some time ago and so when the surge ends things should begin to get better. The gas cans are full. The generator is at the ready. The suitcases are at the door should we need them but that is looking less likely as time goes on. Our hearts go out to all the people so badly affected around us!
