One of our more famous signs is the one at a local gravel yard and was built about eighteen years ago. The owner of the Kelmor Pit was a good customer of ours. We purchased a lot of gravel from him as well. One day Bill, the owner, called me to ask for a new sign. I went to visit him and he told me to ‘just make it a landmark’. It was a tall order but when I went back to show him the concept I had dreamed up Bill loved it. Over the next weeks we fabricated the digger robot and proudly delivered it to the yard. He was perched high on a pile of stones near the entrance. Bill decided the sign needed a name so he took out a small advertisement in the local paper asking people to submit their pick. The winner was to receive a free load of gravel or dirt. Amazingly, Bill received over 400 entries with ‘SCOOPS’ being the final choice. Scoops would come down off his giant pile of stones from time to time and stand on the back of a flatbed truck and ride in all the local parades. Kids and adults knew who he was and loved to see him there. The Scoops sign won both national and international awards and was featured in many magazines around the world. He stands proudly at the gravel yard to this day!
